Characteristics: The Japanese Bantam is a truly unusual breed of chicken! This is one of the few breeds that is a "true bantam", meaning that it is not, and never was bred as a standard size chicken. The breed must be really low to the ground, very short stocky legs and a high, well-carried tail, with a short back. This gives the correct appearance, which needs to be low and broad, the tail needs to be very upright and not over to one side. They are extremely short-legged, their tails should be well spread, and pointing almost straight up, and their combs, and wattles should be proportionally very large (which makes them susceptible to frostbite). The rooster's comb should be firm and straight on the head, evenly serrated with five distinct points. They have friendly personalities, and will ride on shoulders and allow themselves to be pet and held by someone. The hens make a good broody and can make good mothers. They are easy to tame. They should be kept inside on clean, dry bedding in all but the best weather to maintain good feather condition. Feathers (especially white) will stain easily on the wing tips that drag on the floor if let out in the wet. During cold weather, it is often necessary to provide some additional heat unless they are kept in a reasonably well insulated building. The Japanese Bantams carry the dominant creeper gene Cp which gives the breed short legs. If two short legged birds are bred together, according to Mendals law, 25% of the offspring will be pure for Cp, a lethal gene combination which causes a disability making them unable to hatch. 50% of the offspring will carry one Cp gene and are therefore short legged as per the breed standard and the final 25% will not carry the gene and be long legged. Breeding a short legged with a long legged will produce 50% short legged, 50% long legged without any lethal embryos. The lethal gene combination that causes 25% of chicks to be unable to hatch. Not a hardy bird, can be good fliers. Breeding for good type, and especially short legs, and correct tail angle is not easy. The Japanese bantam also come in a variety called frizzled, in which the feathers are turned outward, and they comes in such a wide and stunning range of colors, including Black Tailed White, Black Tailed Buff, Buff Columbian, White, Black, Birchen Grey, Silver Grey, Dark Grey, Millers Grey, Mottled Black, Mottled Blue, Mottled Red, Blue, Lavender, Cuckoo, Red, Tri-coloured, Wheaten Bred, Partridge Bred, Brown Red, Blue Red, Silver and Gold Duckwing.
Weight: Hens - 500 - 600 grs (22 oz) e roosters - 700 - 800 grs (26 oz).
