Characteristics: The bantam | miniature version of the Cochin is of the feather legged class. The miniature size, and counter parts to the Standard size Cochin chicken. They make excellent pets, can be shown very well, very tame and kid friendly temperament. The Cochin is also known for being very good mothers to baby chicks, and are known to be good surrogate incubating birds in even ornamental birds breeding. However, they are slow to mature. They are known for their gentle disposition, and profuse feathering. The hens are good brooder and mother. They have a fluffy appearance and have feathered legs and feet. Noted for the exotic & round look, profusion of soft like down in the under fluff of feathering, leg feathering, toe feathering, gentle nature and kid friendly temperament. The Cochin chicken has a standard size and bantam sizes and both handle colder regions well and are cold tolerant. Their very fluffy cushion and short, fluffy tail give them a unique look, with their short, curved looking back as a result. Cochins also will adapt very easily to confined spaces or open range. The rooster’s comb should be of medium size, with five points that stick straight into the air. The rooster should also have round, and long wattles, and earlobes. The hens has a rather small comb, which conforms to their head, and their wattles, and earlobes are small as well. So, the most distinctive feature of the Cochin is the excessive plumage that covers legs, and foots. The skin beneath the feathers is yellow and the egg colour is light brown. Cochins also come in a variety called frizzled, in which the feathers are turned outward. Several color varieties were admitted into the American Standard of Perfection between 1874 and up to 1982. Also, there are birds that are either standardisised colours that are being re-built in order to add a desired improvement, so are not correct to the show breed standard for that particular colour. So, the Cochin breed comes in a variety of colours including black, birchen, buff, blue, blue red, brown red, barred, columbian, cuckoo, golden laced, mealy grey, mottled, partridge, salmon, silver laced, splashed, wheaten blue tail, wheaten black tail, white, etc.
